Nurturing Speaking Confidence among Lower Intermediate ESL Learners (e-ISBN 978-967-18911-7-9)
Effective communication in English is a critical skill for ESL (English as a Second Language) learners, yet many lower-intermediate learners face challenges in speaking. They often struggle with limited vocabulary, and inaccurate pronunciation, compounded by anxiety of making mistakes. Such obstacles hinder their confidence, leading to withdrawal from speaking activities. This situation not only affects academic performance but also limits their ability to interact in social and professional contexts.
Teachers, who always play a pivotal role in guiding these learners, often face difficulties in providing tailored support to address their unique needs. Perhaps, some lack the tools and strategies to create an encouraging environment where weak ESL learners feel relaxed to express themselves communicatively. In response to these issues, an e-handbook titled Nurturing Speaking Confidence among Lower Intermediate ESL Learners: A Handbook was published (e-ISBN 978-967-18911-7-9) in January 2025. The e-handbook provides 50 practical communicative activities which were implemented among lower intermediate learners through two-year action research.
The communicative activities were specially designed, implemented and re-designed a few times. Subsequently, they were divided into three levels of difficulties to nurture and boost learners’ speaking confidence step by step. Those activities aim to develop confidence, foster fluency and improve pronunciation in a low-pressure setting. Beyond doubt, the e-handbook equips ESL teachers with communicative activities that create a positive and supportive classroom atmosphere. By bridging the gap between learner needs and teacher resources, this e-handbook offers a comprehensive and progressive approach to nurturing communication skills among weak ESL learners.
